Decline in PC Market due to increase in Windows 7 Sales

Apple's iPad has not affected the decline of the PC market, according to a research firm.

Apple's iPad has not affected the decline of the PC market, according to a research firm.

The data compiled by the NDP Group has revealed that just 14% of iPad users chose to buy a tablet instead of a PC during the last holiday season, making the claim that notebook computers have suffered cannibalisation "incorrect".

In its Apple iPad Owner Study II report, the firm claims that the fall in PC purchases is because of an increase in computer sales following the launch of Windows 7.

NPD analyst Stephen Baker said: "The conventional wisdom that says tablet sales are eating into low-priced notebooks is most assuredly incorrect.

He added: "Overall it appears that the vast majority of iPad purchases to-date have been incremental to the consumer technology industry."

NPD also said that consumers were indifferent to 3G connectivity in the iPad, with sales of the WiFi-only iPad increasing 33%.

However, it added that over two-thirds of iPads are still 3G-equipped models.
