HP chooses USB 3.0 over Thunderbolt

HP has decided not to incorporate Intel's new high-speed data transfer technology

HP has decided not to incorporate Intel's new high-speed data transfer technology, Thunderbolt, into its desktop PCs, opting instead to remain with USB 3.0.

It means HP's computers - at least in the near future - will continue to come with the Superfast USB, which has better support from suppliers of components and peripherals.

The Thunderbolt technology promises speeds of up to 10Gbps for data/display transfer between PCs and connected hard drives, mass storage devices and monitors.

However, its wider adoption by PC makers is limited because there are no external storage devices and displays currently supporting the interface.

HP's worldwide marketing manager for desktops Xavier Lauwaert daid: "We did look at [Thunderbolt]. We're still looking into it. Haven't found a value proposition yet."

Although the latest USB 3.0 can achieve only half the speed promised by Thunderbolt, it is still 10 times faster than its predecessor USB 2.0.
