Apple revamps iMac desktop line-up

Apple is upgrading its iMac desktop computer line-up by installing faster processors

Apple is upgrading its iMac desktop computer line-up by installing faster processors, cameras with higher resolution and a new type of data port.

The latest iMacs are powered by Intel quad-core processors, which were available as an upgrade to the standard dual-core processors of the previous generation.

The company says the new models are up to 70% faster than the earlier ones.

The new 21.5in iMac boasts a single Thunderbolt port, which can carry data at speeds 20 times higher than most current USB ports.

The port can also be connected to additional monitors. The 27in iMac has two Thunderbolt ports.

The new iMacs will include Intel's new Sandy Bridge architecture, which Apple upgraded its MacBook Pro line with in February.

This is the first update to the company's signature desktop in over nine months, suggesting Apple's gradual transition into an entirely mobile company.

In the US market, the 21in iMac is priced at $1,199 US (£728), the larger model at $1,699 (£1,031).

Apple last revamped its iMacs in July last year.
