Samsung has unveiled a new hard disk drive
Samsung has unveiled a new hard disk drive which it claims is the first of its kind to offer 1TB of data storage on a 3.5-inch platter.
The Korean consumer electronics firm said the F6 generation 3.5-inch drive in the Spinpoint EcoGreen series will run at 5400RPM and will come with a 32MB cache and SATA 6Gb connectivity.
The new drive, which offers storage capacities of 3TB and 4TB, is the first-ever single HDD to provide so much space. Current desktop HDDs top out at 3TB (4x750GB).
Samsung is also planning smaller 2.5-inch HDDs, which integrate two 500GB platters to offer a storage capacity of 1TB, with a spindle speed of 5400RPM for use in notebooks.
The company has not revealed exact launch dates for the drive, although it is expected to release it later this year.
