UK Wi-Fi network provider The Cloud is set to purchased by BskyB
UK Wi-Fi network provider The Cloud is set to purchased by BskyB, the public broadcaster has confirmed.
As part of the deal, BskyB will have control over 5, 000 public Wi-Fi hotspots of The Cloud. Customers who avail themselves of certain Sky telecom packages will also be offered access to those Wi-Fi locations.
The company added 204,000 net additional broadband customers in the second semester of last year, marking its highest growth in the past 10 quarters.
Around 2.2 million customers subscribe to Sky's broadband service currently. The number of households who took the combination of Sky's broadband, telephony and line rental services rose 61% to 660,000 year-on-year.
"The acquisition gives us ownership of over 5,000 public Wi-Fi locations across the UK, ensuring that customers can access our online service at a network of convenient locations," said BSkyB in its results statement.
BSkyB's move to enter the WiFi market has led mobile operator O2 to announce its own plans of a wireless hotspot network.
