Google Android is 'top mobile OS'

Google's Android has become the number one mobile operating system

Google's Android has become the number one mobile operating system, following strong sales in the final quarter of 2010.

Android claimed the top spot leaving behind Nokia's Symbian OS. According to figures released by analyst firm Canalys, 32.9 million Android-based devices were sold worldwide during the last three months of 2010. This compares with 31 million phones built around Symbian.

The improvement has helped Android to claim a third of the market, while Nokia holds 31%.

Meanwhile, Apple's position remained steady with 16.2% share. RIM fell from 20% to 15% and Microsoft from 7.2% to 3.1%.

Commenting on Android, Canalys analyst Pete Cunningham said: "It's gone from nowhere to number one in the space of two years, which is pretty impressive.

"Android offered a platform that was pretty competitive to the iPhone, and gave the opportunity to vendors like Samsung and HTC to be able to compete with Apple.

"Android has certainly benefited from the timing and the fact that the established platforms such as Symbian and Windows Mobile couldn't compete with the Apple iPhone."
