Research has shown that a growing number of companies are adding cloud computing to their business strategies, as it could help improve performance as well as drive growth.
The Microsoft Discrete Manufacturing Cloud Computing Survey 2011 involved 152 IT and business decision-makers within automotive, aerospace, high-tech and electronics, and industrial equipment manufacturing firms.
The biggest benefit of cloud computing is lowered cost of optimising infrastructure, according to 48.3% of those who responded to the poll.
Meanwhile, 47.7% said it facilitates efficient collaboration across different countries, and 38.4% believe cloud computing is popular because of its ability to respond quickly to business demands.
In an effort to drive solutions based on cloud computing across manufacturing networks, the technology giant has created a Reference Architecture Framework for Discrete Manufacturers Initiative (DIRA Framework).
Firms including Apriso, Camstar Systems, Iconics, Rockwell Automation, Siemens and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd are currently involved in the initiative.
