Firms fail to calculate cloud ROI

Businesses are struggling to measure the monetary benefits of cloud

Businesses are struggling with identifying ways to measure the monetary benefits derived from investing in cloud technology, a poll has shown.

A survey of 307 cloud specialists at global companies carried out by The Open Group found that more than three in five said their organisations do not have a return-on-investment (ROI) mechanism in place.

According to the survey report, although cloud continues to be at the forefront of IT discussions due to the potential system optimisation and cost savings associated with it, the business impact of its implementation remains unclear.

Chris Harding, forum director for The Open Group, said that the finding comes despite ROI potentially being "the most commonly used measure of success of a technical change".

The surveyed cloud experts worked at companies ranging in size from fewer than 200 to more than 5,000 employees. The poll also included government IT professionals.

The Open Group is a vendor and technology-neutral consortium that focuses on the development of IT certifications and standards.
