The global enterprise software market revenue grew last year, after falling in 2009, new figures show.

A report by research firm Gartner found that total software revenue rose year-on-year by 8.5% to $245 billion (£149bn) worldwide in 2010 from $226 billion (£137bn).

Joanne Correia, managing vice president at Gartner, said the year saw major software vendors expanding their product portfolios, acquiring companies and growing their operations in emerging markets.

She added: "The year represented a return to solid footing as the market recovered and expanded in terms of revenue and geographies."

However, Ms Correia said that not all regions recorded the same rapid pace of recovery.

She said: "Japan and western Europe saw relatively modest dollar-denominated growth, while Latin America and Asia/Pacific saw growth in the mid-to-high teens, nearly double the market average."

Analysts at Gartner said three of the top five vendors saw revenue grow above the industry average, with Microsoft leading the pack.

The computer systems giant recorded a rise of 22.4% in its worldwide enterprise software market revenue share in 2010.
