Chrome surges ahead as IE struggles

Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari made gains in the highly competitive global browser market

Google's Chrome and Apple's Safari made gains in the highly competitive global browser market during April as Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox slipped, new figures show.

Market leader IE was unable to extend its lead over rivals despite the arrival of the latest version, as its overall share fell marginally to 55.11% - its lowest ever figure.

Despite the fall, Microsoft's browser still had a market share two-and-a-half times bigger than that of second-place Firefox, which went down by two-tenths of a percentage point.

Chrome, which came in third, increased its share by five percentage points to just under 12% in April. The browser from Google has seen its slice of the overall market grow by 65% over the past 10 months.

Apple has also made impressive gains, thanks in part of the success of its web-connected iPhone and iPad devices. The Safari browser has increased its market share by around 50% since June 2010.
