Android 'best-selling platform'

Android emerged as the best-selling smartphone platform in the first quarter of 2011

Android emerged as the best-selling smartphone platform in the first quarter of 2011, new figures have shown.

A report from analyst firm Canalys found that Android powered more than a third (35%) of all smartphones sold in the first three months of the year, or 35.7 million of the 101 million units shipped globally.

Findings revealed that Nokia's market share fell by almost a quarter (24%) in the quarter, despite the company recording a growth in sales mainly in the Asia Pacific region.

Pete Cunningham, principal analyst at Canalys, said: "Nokia is under considerable strain in the smartphone market as it transitions strategy, platforms and people. Its worldwide reach, however, should never be underestimated.

"Canalys' country-level data shows that Nokia remains number one in 28 countries, including mainland China, where it grew 79% to 8.9 million units, thanks in part to Chinese new year shipments."

According to the report, Nokia, Apple, RIM, Samsung and HTC emerged as the top five smartphone vendors.

The Asia Pacific region became the largest smartphone market with year-on-year growth of 98% - ahead of Europe for the first time since 2007.
