HP and IBM 'lead server market'

HP and IBM are among the key players of a growing healthy server market, according to an analyst firm

Market researcher Gartner found the two firms have been leading the server market, which witnessed a revenue growth of 17.3% to $12.6 billion (£7.7bn) during the first three months of 2011.

The analyst firm reported shipments for servers grew by of 8.5% to 2.3 million units.

HP has claimed the top position in both revenue and shipments, with market share of 30.2% and 29.8%, respectively.

IBM is behind HP in the second spot in revenue generation and third in shipments.

According to Gartner, x86 servers have seen a growth of 8.6% in units shipped for the year and 17.5% in revenues.

Jeffrey Hewitt, research VP at Gartner, said in a statement: "RISC/Itanium Unix servers finally exited their slump and grew 5.2% in shipments and 20.7%in vendor revenue, compared with the same quarter last year."

He added: "The 'other' CPU category, which is primarily mainframes, showed a growth in vendor revenue of 19.6%."

Figures released by another analysis firm, IDC, regarding the growth of the market are similar to the figures by Gartner. It said that it saw healthier Unix server and mainframe spaces.
