Cloud computing spending 'to rise'

Business spending on cloud computing is expected to grow by at least 10%

Business spending on cloud computing is expected to grow by at least 10% this year, according to a new survey.

Osterman Research, which questioned 100 IT executives in the US for Electric Cloud, said companies spent $6,335 (£3,993) or $23.3 (£14.6) per employee, for developing cloud computing infrastructure last year.

In 2011, this amount is expected to rise to $6,920 (£4,360) - around $26.6 (£16.7) per employee, it said.

More than half (56%) of the firms surveyed said they were using or planning to use private cloud computing for software development or testing.

System testing was considered to be the software development task benefiting the most from private cloud computing, followed by requirements planning and tracking and static analysis.

Spending figures from the survey also suggest that currently the technology has been adopted mostly by smaller firms, with an average workforce size of 300.

According to Osterman, the median number of employees at firms it sampled for the study was 403.
