Warning over location-based apps

A technology expert has warned businesses about location-based applications

A technology expert has warned businesses about location-based applications, saying the use of such services could lead to technical hitches.

Applications such as the newly launched Facebook Deals may pose a "major technical challenge" to firms making an effort to respond to user events in real-time, according to Giles Nelson, deputy CTO at Progress Software.

With the help of Facebook Deals, local businesses are enabled to offer deals when users check in to their place on Facebook.

Together with this, users are also offered retailer promotions through location-based advertising.

A Facebook spokesman told Computer Weekly: "Deals are free for businesses and they give businesses the opportunity to reward loyal customers with discounts and other special offers, so they can build valuable relationships with this influential audience."

Nelson added: "A key challenge for any organisation thinking about delivering a location-based application or service is how to ensure it scales and allows the sophisticated types of interaction that are possible.

"Most location-based applications require a strong real-time element. Location-based information is a perfect example of an event, usually reported over a mobile network and delivered to a mobile device."
