HP announces new tablet, two phones

HP has revealed a new tablet computer to rival Apple's iPad

HP has revealed a new tablet computer to rival Apple's iPad and a whole range of Android tablets that are causing frenzy in the market.

HP's new tablet, called the TouchPad, comes with a 9.7in display, will contain a number of new features such as wireless printing that works like AirPrint on Apple. It will be powered with the company's Palm webOS.

According to Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP's personal systems group, the TouchPad will "transform how people think, how they feel and how they connect".

The tablet will be able to connect with HP's new phone, the Pre3, simply by tapping the devices together.

Along with the Pre3, HP will also be releasing another phone, the Veer, which comes with a 2.6in screen.

According to HP, the devices will be a substitute for "jumbo phones", with Pre3 offering a 3.6in screen.

The new phones will pack in slide-out keyboards along with facilities to video call. They will also contain storage space of up to 16GB or 32GB.

CCS Insight, analysts, have said that pricing and distribution of the Veer and the Pre3 would be key to their success, but also added that in spite of the TouchPad's dissimilarity with Android tablets, the device could face challenge from upcoming rival counterparts.
