Intel launches chip for tablets

Intel hopes to enter the mobile device market with the launch of a new chip for tablet computers.

Intel hopes to enter the mobile device market with the launch of a new chip for tablet computers.

Chips by the semiconductor company are used in 80% of laptops and desktop PCs. However, it has so far been less successful in installing its chips into smaller devices such as mobile phones and tablets.

While many customers now prefer to buy tablets instead of upgrading their PCs, Intel is looking at ways to diversify its revenue sources.

Intel's chips are known to consume a lot of energy in small mobile devices. The company hopes its new chips will be more energy efficient.

With the help of the energy-saving chip, Intel is trying to enter the mobile phone market dominated by lower-power processors from firms such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.

One of the challenges that Intel faces is that mobile chips are usually built around a chip design from a company called ARM Holdings, which is different from the x86 design that Intel uses.

Intel said that more than 35 tablet and "hybrid" computers are being built on its newest chip, which is part of the Atom family of chips.
