BT plans copper broadband upgrade

BT is planning to bring its up-to-20mbps services to four out of five UK households & businesses

BT is planning to bring its up-to-20mbps services to four out of five UK households and businesses by the end of 2011 through an upgrade of its copper broadband network.

At the moment, BT's standard "up to" speed of 8mbps is offered across 99% of the country.

The next generation ADSL2+ service known as the Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) connects 1,017 exchanges and currently serves 15.5 million customers - around 60% of the population.

BT's plan is to increase this proportion to 80% by extending the 20mbps service to around 30,000 lines every week.

Internet service providers including TalkTalk and BT Retail will be able to access the improved network.

BT already has big plans for its fibre broadband network, which is capable of supporting speeds of up to 40mbps.

The service currently covers over four million premises, and the provider is targeting two-thirds of the UK before 2016 with the help of a £2.5 billion investment.

It plans to add 90 fibre ethernet nodes to the existing 1,000 by the end of this year.
